Do I need to keep all these books, I'm finding. Or can I just read them and drop them on the ground?

You should never throw books on the ground. Put them back on the shelves.

Most are there just for atmosphere.

I think you should read the books.

There are a few good reads:

The History Of The Fateful Coin
The History Of The Dead Three (Very important to the story...good tale)

Most others give history to the world, towns and such. But some do give slight insights into characters and stuff..

Plus there is the tomes....

I wouldn't waste game time reading them. Check out the Baldur's Gate Library instead.

That's something I haven't thought of before. Set yourself up in one of the empty houses in Beregost and start filling the shelves. See if you can get one of every book in the game.
