i'm having some difficulty figuring out what I need to do with the colored globe-producing machine in the northwest of the map. i'm pretty sure it said what to do when i first approached it but i forgot what it said and its not in my journal. this is for the final key i need to descend into the next level and any help would be great.

Ok, basically what the machine says is that you can produce globes from the machine. Some globes you can use for yourself (they act as different spells, one globe can increase saves temporarily on your party, others can heal, etc. There is one of each globe that CANNOT be used in any way by yourself, and that globe can be inserted into the colored columns that match the globe color to get an item..

Each part of the machine can produce 4 globes of one color, 4 blue, 4 red, 4 purple, 4 green. When you produce a globe, there are monsters that are summoned based on what globe you produce. The more globes you produce, the stronger the monsters.

Example

Make a Green Globe. Some monsters are summoned to fight you
Make a 2nd Green Globe. Some stronger monsters are summoned against you
Make a 3rd Green Globe. Some really tough monsters appear and attack
Make the last Green Globe. The monsters that now appear are VERY hard. You will have a hard battle here. One 4th globe color produced 3 Elder Orbs and a Beholder Lair queen or something like that.

Now that you have 4 of each globe (16 total) you need to find one globe of each color that you can't use, and place those 4 (one red, one blue, one green, one purple) into the columns that match the globe color. You can easily tell which one it is by trying to equipt them. You can equipt 3 of the colored globes, but not the 4th.
Once all 4 unusuable globes are placed in their correct columns, presto, you did it. Then you can test out the other 12 globes and see what magical effects you get from them. They are actually pretty good in some cases.
