Heya!
I`m almost finished with BG I think and I want to get a new RPG to christmas. The plan is to buy TOTSC and make a super hero which I`m taking over to BG2. Before that I want to try a new RPG so that it will be a bit more exciting to restart BG. Maybe Diablo is good? Thankful for all opinions. Btw BG is the only RPG I ever tried. |

If you're already planning on buying TotSc and are looking for a second choice, I would recommend either Planescape:Torment or Icewind Dale.
Planescape is a totally different setting with some awesome npcs, and a great story line. Icewind Dale is a more classic dungeon hack. Slash your way thru monster after monster on your way to the big baddie at the end.

I did not care for Diablo at all because it is almost purely hack and slash. That is the only other RPG I've tried out. The game pretty much consists of reflexes: click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click. The reason BG is so good is that it brings AD&D to life in a CRPG--which means following a story, figuring out the plot, roleplaying, etc.
I too am thinking about trying a new CRPG out and have gleaned a fair bit from various boards on this subject... What I have consistently heard is that Planescape: Torment is plot driven and very, very good--there's much less fighting, though. Icewind Dale is the opposite--it's almost all fighting and has relatively little story, and in general is more of one long dungeon crawl; I've heard the fighting is very good. Others RPGs that I've seen recommended a lot are Arcanum and Pools of Radiance. It is a strategy game, but I've been hearing some good things about Stronghold. I like Age of Kings/The Conquerors so it sounds like it would be right up my ally.

Some others to consider are:
Fallout - not a fantasy setting per se .. its a post-apocalyptic world - more sci-fi fantasy (there is also fallout 2 and fallout:tactics, but Fallout is fairly old and should be available fairly cheaply .. so it might be worth a try.) THrone of Darkness - heard some good things about this one, samurais, ninjas .. etc.

Pools of Refuse was an unplayable pile of dung, even after you got through the various bugs. Most poorly thought-out rpg in a long time.
Arcanum was original, interesting, but buggy as hell. Also, it played EXACTLY like Fallout, but with dumber combat. If you like the BG type games, Icewind Dale/Geart of Winter is quite good (but make SURE you get HoW at the same time...serious game balance and graphichs improvements) Planescape is one of the best rpg's of all time, IMO. But very "talky" If you like a lot of action/combat, this might not be the game for you. Wizardy 8 is, I think, the best rpg of the last several years. Incredibly tough to master, but character development has NEVER been done even close to this good, and combat is incredibly tactical, you have to think through each phase of a battle. The exact opposite of a "hack&slash" game. Super fun, super addictive.

Hmm, Wizardy 8 does look really good. Thanks for that, Merkin.

quote: I don't like final fantasy that much. Games that i would recommand in this order are : Fallout : suggested before. Great setting, good story, old games so cheap and you get a gun in your hands as opposed to all the swords. There is no magic involved here so if you want that try one of the following. Planescape torment : also explained before Might and magic 7 and/or 8 : good games. Good storyline and they are easy to figure out control wise. Arcanum : buggy from time to time. Not a bad game but it has a Fallout feeling to it but can't quite get their. The problem with this game is that the developers wanted a mix of tech and magic and they failed to implement both in a reliable way. Icewind dale : good for fighting if you like hack 'n' slash. Stay away from Diablo. That game s..... Well, you get my meaning.

Planescape Torment would be my recommendation, great story, great looking spell graphics, and yeah, maybe a TAD bit less fighting than BG, but not by much.
IceWind Dale is also a good one, is mostly fighting, kinda same ol' same ol' as BG in the beginning, but later on the enemies get really interesting, and HUGE! In this game, you have to create all six of your characters right off the bat, no NPCs. |
