I was pondering possibilities for two-man fighting parties, and thought a Kensai and an Archer would be pretty tough to beat - one close in, the other far away.

No tank.

No really, the Kensai was never made to tank.

Now, a Monk and an Archer, THAT would be interesting to see.

Without having tested it (which, ok, makes my opinion suspect... ), I'd say a 2-party team would need to be a Fighter/Thief & a Cleric/Mage. Unless you plan on fighting a bunch of Yuan-Ti throughout the game, you're going to need some magic & healing. That combo gives you the ability to scout ahead, Backstab-then-assault, with some artillery coming in.

Of course, you could mix it up a bit, & maybe go Fighter/Cleric & Mage/Thief & possibly achieve better results (although your Mage/Thief may be hung out to dry if you have him Backstab to initiate combat) given that both characters would be slightly better in combat.

Two Fighter-types by themselves would be hard-pressed to deal with some of the more magically-inclined enemies in the game.

Monk can detect traps, but, not disarm them. A Monk is capable of healing himself, and, once they get going, they really don't take damage much.

The Archer has some limited healing ability of his own, useful low level druid type spells.

Since the Monk is capable of running quite fast on his own, he can lead really tough enemies on a merry goose chase while the Archer does what he does best. Snipe.

With hide in shadows and and his one shot kill kung fu power, a Monk is the premier mage killer. Hide, sneak in, "HIYA!" Bam. Dead mage.

You can play the Carl Douglas song "Kung Fu Fighting" and get your self worked up for big boss battles.

It is hysterical to watch a Monk with his bare hands cause "chunky" death to monsters. Watching a Monk punch or kick the crap out of something and then seeing it explode into meaty chunky bits never gets old. It is always good for a laugh.

You can add in your own screwed up vocal tracks complete with poor lip-synching. While watching the fight on your computer, say stuff like "You killed Kwan Lei. You insult my honour! You must DIE!" Continue moving lips long after you are done speaking, and, start moving lips a few seconds before actually saying anything.

Order Chinese food take out before sitting down to play.

Give your Archer suitably black duds, and, have him be the assassin ninja in training.

Have fun

If you download the tactics mod, I would say an Anti-Paladin and Archer would be a vicious combo. With boots of speed for both they would be able to cut through the baddies.

Monk-Archer and Anti-Paladin-Archer both sound interesting - the magic user combos are great, but I was more interested in what people thought about a pure bash-n-smash tandem.

How about a barbarian and a berserker?

An evil party with a Barbarian and an Archer. The Barbarian could get 80% Resistance to Physical attacks with Defender of Easthaven, and with the Human Flesh +5 and Cloak of Balduran (if you have that "Lich in the Docks" mod) he could get very nice Magic Resistances as well. His AC would be kind of low, but with 80% PR he would still be a great tank.

An the Archer should be a slinger. With the Sling of Seeking (adds Str bonus to dmg) and one of the Str belts, he could dish out amazing ranged damage. I think a Lvl 34 Archer with Gauntlets of Extraordinary Specialization, GM in Slings, +4 Stones and the Belt of Fire Giant Strength could deal out an average of 33.5 damage with each hit

The kit who was designed to be the strongest tank, probably is the Berserker. Can use all armours, can achieve Grand Mastery, can go berserk...
A Berserker and an Archer should definetly be worth trying.

If you're feeling creative, go for two Kensais.

The first will dual wield Flails - Flail of Ages and the Defender of Easthaven.
The sceond will carry Halberds - start with Dragon's Breath, and switch to Ravager +6 when time comes.

Elemntal damage en masse, and loads of damage. Since Halberds have extended reach (range?), the Kensai with the Defender will soak the damage and the Halberd carrier will hit safely from behind him.

Hit them fast, hit them hard. That should be your motto.
