Just one small doubt I have: can a thief backstab with any sword-class weapon, or only with daggers and short swords? I thought it was the latter in BG1 , and I've never been able to backstab with anything else.

I confirm that backstab can be done with the afore mentioned blades.
I have my doubts about the blunt weapons however.

You can backstab someone with a quarterstaff... you just have to push really REALLY hard

I thought according to official D&D rules you could backstab with any legal thief weapon. Even though it's called backstab, the whole idea is that by having a good knowledge of an opponent's anatomy, a thief can pick the most vulnerable spot where they are unaware and so could act to avoid all or part of the strike (hence the "back" part), and do a lot more damage potentially than a normal blow. Why not use a club or staff? It seems like you could easily kill someone by whacking them really hard in just the right spot.

So you can back stab with any thief weapons?? So what would happen if you used the High level ability use any item(Throne Of Bhaal) could you back stab with say a two handed sword.
Imagine back stabing with carsomyr with an assasin (Max x7 damage multiplier) Think of the possible Damage!!!!!!!!!!! |

i know it says somewhere that you can't backstab with 2 handed weapons
but backstabbing with any weapon you can put points into sounds right...excluding ranged weapons, of course |

Ayup, from what I've read, you could. Just make sure your rogue is proficient with the weapon or else he would get a -3 penalty for using it(core).
There are some pretty nice blunt weapons out there as I'm seeing while in chapter two. Would only try using them for that " cool effect" though. Try having a fighter not being proficient for something like a club and then use it offhand when ya dont have points for two weapon style. Talk about a BIG penalty. -2 for weapon and -8 for offhanding it. Oh and if you couldn't backstab with anything else it may mean you are sufferinng from the -3 penalty from not having a proficiency point in that weapon skill as said above. You add that in with the "randomness" of the backstab going off and it would seem that you couldn't. Cloaking up and being behind the enemy never hurts but it still doesn't guarantee anything.

Yoy can backstab ONLY with 1-handed weapon! And even worst: only with "valid" 1-handed weapons. You can't backstab with Cortala's Blade, Kachicko's Wakizasi etc. even with * and "Use any items". Imagine backstab with "Impaler"(Spear 1d6+3+10 additional damage)
