Hi Lioness, Dragonlance Chronicles-Dragons of Autumn Twilight starts that excellent series. I think there is now one book which encompasses both Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends (6 books) in one volume. As for the Realms-The Crystal Shard starts a good series where you meet the famous Drizzt.

Agreed. I tried reading Shadowdale when it was first released and never could get though it. First Realms book I read was the Darkwalker on Moonshae series (was fairly good). I still think most of the Drizzt stories were better.

Just my 2.

Well, I just read the Icewind Dale Trilogy. IT was great. Right now, I'm reading the legacy of the drow series. So far it's been wonderful, as well.

Which is better? I guess that depends on what you like. Personally, I'm really enjoying the Drizzt Do'Urden story lines. I plan on reading the Avatar series(which you are reading) after I'm finished with Drizzt.

If you want to read the Dark Elf Trilogy first, it gives you an understanding of the Drow culture. I think you need this to understand what Drizzt has to sacrifice in order to become the legend he is.

Hmmmm...

If you're reading The Avatar Trilogy then the next book you should go for is Prince of Lies (next in the series, a VERY good read, vast impovement on it's predecessors).

As everyone else has said, try the Drizzt books by R.A.Salvatore:
Series 1 :Icewind Dale, Streams of Silver, The Halflings Gem
Series 2 :Homeland, Exile, Sojourn
There are others but I can't remeber the titles.

Also try books by Elaine Cunningham (I especially liked Danilo Than, a character in Elfshadow)
Series :Elfshadow, Elfsong, Silver Shadows
Series :Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs

Other books to try are some of the Harper series. This is an open-ended series by different authors. Try Soldiers Of Ice and Ring of Winter.

Hope this helps

The core Dragonlance reads come from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

The order of Dragonlance reading should go like this:

The Chronicles:
Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Dragons of Winter Night
Dragons of Spring Dawning

Legends
Time of the Twins
War of the Twins
Test of the Twins

Then you should check out...
Dragons of Summer Flame
Second Generation
All six volumes of The Meetings Sextet
The Soul Forge (The Raistlin Chronicles Volume I)
Brothers in Arms (The Raistlin Chronicles Volume II)

And there's a few others worth checking out by authors other than Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, like The Brothers Majere and Fistandantilus Reborn.

At this point comes Fifth Age stuff, which I really don't dig on at all.

I didn't know there were any novels out on the Fifth Age. Not overly good then?

Lioness, with regards to forgotten Realms and the Drizzt saga. The chronological order of these is as follows:

THE DARK ELF TRILOGY
Homeland
Exile
Sojourn

THE ICEWIND DALE TRILOGY
The Chrystal Shard
Streams Of Silver
The Halflings Gem

LEGACY OF THE DROW QUARTET
Legacy
Starless Night
Siege Of Darkness
Passage To Dawn

There is also a follow up series to these books which is not based on Drizzt but tells the stories of his enemies/allies from these earlier stories.

PATHS OF DARKNESS
The Silent Blade - Drizzt is in this book and it is mainly about his rivalry with Artemis Entreri.

Spine Of The World - The story of Wulfgars battle against insanity.

Servant Of The Shard - Tells more of Jarlaxle and Entreri's partnership and does not feature Drizzt though he is referred to constantly.

Sea Of Swords - Not yet published

The Avater trilogy occurs during the legacy of the drow quartet and there is a reference to this in there. The Darkwalker on Moonshae set of books are probably among the earliest FR books written and were the first ones I read. Also, the Threat From The Sea Trilogy is a great read. For more info go to

http://www.wizards.com/books/main.as...orgottenrealms

This will give you a good idea of the core reads in the FR setting
