I've killed a Squix in two separate treaure chests, one inside the treasure vault of the Castle and other in some barracks of the Castle. After the Squix is dead, the treaure chest appears to be full, but I can't find anything. Am I missing something?

No, you're missing nothing. I finally decided that all that pseudo treasure was Squix excreta.

Nope - no treasure. It's part of the squix's camouflage...

If you've ever played other RPG's, you may recognize this as being similar to a creature called a "Mimic". Mimics like to resemble treasure and other items to lure greedy adventurers to their doom. I think the Squix is a variation on that theme.

As a hilarious note, I once played a table-top game with a rather demented DM. He would have Mimics in his game's trading posts that would resemble bottles of "Ye olde Viagra", dirty magazines, cases of ale, etc. It got to be a hoot trying to figure out what the Mimics were going to ape next.
