Strange Merchants (small spoilers)

I left the Underdark exit and was waylaid by enemies, but they weren't the 'enemies' I wanted to meet, instead they were about seven 'merchants' who asked me some stuff about myself then turned into clones of me and attacked! I have never encountered them before. Is this part of the game or is it from a mod I have installed? Who were these people? Why did they want to kill me? And how come I never ever got to meet those other friendly 'enemies'?

Never happened to me. Either it's from a mod or it's something you didn't complete earlier in the game like, maybe, Irenicus' assassins(?), or the clones.

Hmmm, perhaps (though I doubt it) it had something to do with me not killing Irenicus' assassins in Spellhold?

Sounds like a bug in the Drizzt encounter; do you have the latest patches for SOA (TOB if you have it); AND any mods you have installed ??
Exactly *which* mods have you installed ??

Tashia, Nalia Romance, Valen, Solaufein, Ascension, TDD, Ease of Use, Item Upgrade.

ADD] If I think reaaaaallly hard, I can vaguely remember this happening on my very first game ever. This was before I had any mods whatsoever.

Do you have all of the relevant pathches ??
As in,
TOB Official Patch
Baldurdash Fixpack
TDD V 1.0.3
TDD Beta Patches
Latest Versions of all of them, in WeiDU format where possible
??

Have you installed any Tweaks/Cheats (such as a TOB XP Cap Remover) ??

If yes to the patches, and no to the Tweaks; then it`s probably a conflict between two of the mods.

I'm not worried about not meeting Drizzt, I just want to know what this quest is. It is obviously to do with some quest or something, perhaps in a mod. I do have all the patches etc.

This is actually a part of the game. They are dopplegangers and it has to do with elements of the Slaver/Twisted Rune quest that BIS never got around to finishing. Just kill them and be on your way.

No. They encounter you after leaving the Underdark, no matter what quests you have done or not done. They are dopplegangers, and have come to kill you. Nothing else.
