Well I read this article and I think its rather stupid to allow them this kind of access to the outside world for the following reasons.

1. They are in there to be punished and perhaps rehabilitated.
2. There is already too big a mess caused by prisoners duping gullible and desperate women.
3. As the article states, it is generating too much mail traffic for the staff to handle.
4. I believe criminals need to be more confined with less freedom, they manage to get drugs and alcohol into the prisons...this should not be possible.

Just my thoughts on the subject America (and others) what do you think?
here is the link.

LOL, stirring the pot again, MagiK? Yes, as physician to the Van Zandt County Jail, I do have opinions. Prisoners should have only limited access to the mails, except to their lawyers and families. We jhad a guy coming up there, pleading for someone to take a message to his incarcerated girlfriend. Seems she was calling his house and bugging his wife. Sow what you want to reap, eh?

I don't think that people should be put into prisons in order to be punished, but so that they would be rehabilitated. And in some cases where rehabilitation is not possible, prisons are needed to protect others.

I agree with Attalus that prisoners should have limited access to mails (except family & lawyers), though I think that they should be able to read material on the Internet. They are allowed to read books, so why not the Internet also. I also think that the prisons and their guards should be 'inspected' more often in order to prevent access to drugs and alcohol and to also prevent abuse. And to make sure the prisons are appropriate and do not break any of the human rights.

I don't mean they should be completely cut off, but they should have luxuries that law abiding citizens have to pay for andwork for limited...very limited. Unfortunately most people are not rehabilitated (hence the repeat offenders). The drugs should never make it into the prisons in the first place requireing inspections. Obviously if stuff is coming in, then security is too loose and their freedom of movement too generous. I realize that prison is no picnic compared to normal american life, but when foreigners come in and laugh at what we call "prison" and it is better that their normal lives in their own country, I think we might be making it a bit too comfy...it should be something feard and avoided at all costs....but then I am not a touchy feely type and believe in spankings

I don't think prisoners should have any freedom. I mean they have cable tv. I say give all the extra money they give to jails they should give to homeless or schools.
Spelca: I am not convinced that our criminal justice system is very good at rehab. I don't think that the setting of incarceration is condusive to rehab. Call me .... I don't know what, but I think for rehabilitation to be successful, you have to have at least a little bit of a loving environment.

MagiK: It is my understanding (I may be wrong though, confirm/deny Attalus?) that a lot of the drugs enter prison via the guards or other officials. Or people are paid to look the other way. Maybe I should start another thread about why I think drugs should be legal in the first place. As long as there is a demand, supply will be encouraged. Its only capitalism Well, ok not capitalism, but basic economics.

Re comfyness of prisons, I think it is a function of our society. Most US citizens enjoy a much higher standard of life than the rest of the world. I am not suprised that our inmates also have more food and better medical care than most of the 3rd world. I hope you're not suggesting that we only feed our prisoners bread and water once a day because someone in China lives on a bowl of rice a day. (Hey, I just quoted Jello Biafra without realizing it )

Re spankings: just don't ask me to spank you

Is there a particularly compelling reason why they SHOULD get more than the bare essentials for nutritional survival? I do kind of take exception to prisoners getting for free what I and everyone who doesnt break the law have to pay for. I think the problem I see is that a lot of prisoners don't care if they ever contribute to society or live a decent upstanding life, and that may be why there is not much in the way of rehab going on.

I strongly support prisoners right. they maybe convicted for the crimes they committed, their BASIC HUMAN rights shouldn't be take away.

you have to take into consideration that some so-called prisoners DID NOT commitee crimes at all.

I think that their luxuries should be cut off. No tv, internet or any of that stuff.
