To anyone with more PC and Internet skills than me ( most of you !! )

I now have a major problems with file downloads - part way thru the download, usually between 500 K and 1 meg, the download suddenly stops with the message "download complete". IT ISNT!! I haven't been able to complete any downloads successfully now for 2 weeks. No matter what or where the file I'm trying to get, I get the same problem.

I'm not running any screensavers ( not that I thought that should make a difference? ) or any power management, and I haven't changed any settings in months.

Help me, please !!

Scanning for viruses might work, but it does sound worse than that... failing a virus scan, try taking it into a technician; they should be able to figure out what it is failry quickly

Hmm... are you using any kind of download manager? If you are, try turning it off... that helped me more than one. *shrug*

Are you trying to download the same files or is it doing it with a file you've never tried to download before too? Sometimes if a download completes at say 35%, and you try to overwrite it by downloading it again, your browser thinks it's only 35% big and will not get the full thing. It's only ever happened once to me though. Try deleting your temprorary internet files and try again. Otherwise you might want to actually use a download manager and see if that makes a difference. Getright is a pretty good one but I'm not sure if there's any better alternatives as I do not use them myself.

More info:

These are all different files.
I only download one file at a time.
I clean out the internet cache, and delete the partial file, after failed downloads.
I'd prefer not use a download manager - I've never used one, and never had problems until last week.
Running Windows 98 SE, the only version of Windows I've ever had on this PC.

This is a wierd one. Personally I recommend using a download manager such as Getright, Gozilla or Flashget - if you can stand the spyware, then at least you have the chance to resume partial downloads.

However, if you are delving into the more arcane arts such as methods of capturing streaming files then I can't help you

Yes, I reccommend you do use a download manager too, like Get Right and GoZilla (which have 30 days to use, then you pay) or NetAnts or Download Accelerator (which are entirely free). I find the basic Windows downloader very slow, and it looses your download frequently. Then you have to try again. With a Download Manager, this rarely happens, and if it does, you can resume your download from where it left off, rather than start again. This also means that you can download large files over a number of Internet sessions, which the Windows downloader won't let you do.

Give it a go!
