Claire Short's change of mind not to resign meant not only that she is a minister without strong principles but also can not keep her word. After promises to resign she felt that her career would be thus at an end and reversed on her decision.

Though undoubtly Tony Blair will award her heavily for loyalty but I wonder if she can EVEN get re-elected by her constituents in the next general election as a MP??? Will you vote for someone who betrayed the anti-war movement and went back on her words? Obviously this depends on your attitude to war, but nevertheless 50% of Britons are against the matter and more so within the labour voters. Therefore I find Claire Short's position in the party slightly improved but her position within her people (which she serves) humiliated and damaged beyond all repair.

I agree - at least Robin Cook stood up for what he believed in.

But the number opposing action is 50% and falling.

Last week the number of Brits opposing action without an additional UN resolution was reported at only 19%. People change their minds all the time, and once this thing is over, it could be that a large majority end up supporting the action. Especially once proof of Saddam's WoMD is found. He wasn't suppose to have any SCUDs left, but he sure fired a few last night.

Now I don't pretend to have any great insight into the UK political system, but that is what I'm hearing from news sources and online friends, some of whom support and some of whom who oppose action in Iraq.

I don't think that's true Ronn. I think the number supporting war without a second resolution was 19%.
