Priest Arrested, Accused Of Soliciting Prostitute POSTED: 1:17 p.m. EDT August 4, 2003 UPDATED: 7:13 a.m. EDT August 5, 2003 A Roman Catholic priest was arrested during the weekend for soliciting a prostitute and masturbating in his car, according to Orange County sheriff's officials. Thomas Vellappallil, 40, was charged Saturday with soliciting a prostitute and committing a lewd act for offering to pay an undercover police officer $20 for oral sex, according to a report from the Orange County Sheriff's Office. "We are very saddened. We are keeping Father Thomas and the church parishioners in our prayers." Vellappallil was released from jail on $750 bond. Vellappallil had served at his church in Orlando for four years.

The part in bold is what realy gets me going. If you have sex with an altar boy then they hide you out, pay your lawyer bills, and generaly try to protect you from any form of criminal prosecution. The first time you touch a woman though, they toss you out and leave you to twist in the breeze. Talk about screwd up priorities, sheesh!! Well, I can see why this would be grounds for dismissing a priest. Imagine putting that experience in a sermon. But I agree, after the sheltering of pedophile priests, it's outrageous. Also, what's with the lewd act thing. I mean, I somehow doubt he was masturbating in rush hour traffic in front of soccer-mom vans. He was probably in a secluded alleyway. That second charge is pretty stupid, in my opinion.

In Nevada, it is optional in counties with less than either 30 000 or 300 000 people. Other than that, yep.

[/QUOTE]Not really sure, but I think it was mainly to protect the tourism industries of Reno and Las Vegas, because they would lose a lot of families if prostitutes were found all over the place. Canada's even weirder. Prostitution itself is not illegal, but you can't be part of a brothel, solicit prostitution, or live solely off the benefits of prostitution (ie, can't put on your tax return, "Prostitute" as occupation )

Visiting prostitutes is illegal, so therefore they have undercover agents walking the streets, sexing up every guy that passes by, hoping they can catch one who shows interrest ? And than you get arrested like a common criminal, because some bimbo just made you horny ?

I've never visited a prostitute in my life, but i can imagine if i'm walking somewhere, minding my own business, and some sexy looking mama steps up to me, whispering.... um ... naughty things in my ear, i'd make some time for it. Now how the hell does that make me a criminal ?

The thing with prostitution as it stands now, is that prostitutes are usually exploited, addicted individuals on skid row. Pimps and hustlers force them, among them many underage girls, to sell themselves for near-nothing. That is the reason the laws exist. However, the advantage of legalising it is that you can regulate it. If you make mandatory ages, and force doctor's exams, and generally regulate it (as is done in the Netherlands and Nevada), then you get a good, clean, though underground, industry.

Quite honestly, the reason it's not gonna be legalised anytime soon in the States is because it offends people. Some people don't think it's right, and so there are your laws. I don't agree with the current laws myself, much like I think that criminalizing marijuana and consensual sodomy should both be shot straight to hell (yes, I know that wasn't part of any subject, but I felt like shooting it in there anyway )
