i'm nearing the end of the game now (i think) and i've never found that my familiar has anything worthwhile to say (i'm a mage/thief imported from BG1).

Do they actually do anything except for a few more HP and some minor rubish abilities..

spoil me..
make carrying round that rabbit worthwhile..

I know! The only advice I ever got from a familiar was yesterday in Irenicus' dungeon from my dust mephit. He said, "get out of here, stupid."

they are pretty useless, except for the extra HP thing, which is quite useful for weak mages. the familiars' advice depends on which chapter you are in, and which familiar you have. I find that they are best for comic relief. My Assassin with a Dust Mephit familiar (NE) always opts to smack it in the head a few times, and it doesn't like being petted much. My PseudoDragon, however, cannot be smacked and is quite receptive to being loved upon.

Familiars get MUCH better in ToB, with more hit points, more abilities, and some more spells... almost good enough to justify taking them out of your pack once in a while. Almost.

I did dig my Imp I once had. Damn, I laughed when he said "What now, boss?" and "No, I'm not feeling well! Give me a huge pile of gold to sleep on!"
