Last post from previous thread.

From the previous thread, Simon and Edward Locke are entertaining their guests Pandaros and Sever at the dinner table of Locke Manor that evening when a maid approaches and announces that "the guests" are within their bedrooms at this time. Confusion ensues.

Meanwhile, Xaver the dwarven cleric has taken up a residence within the Inn this night and has fallen asleep. He is a passerby in search of a good smith to mend some armor, but had the unfortunate luck of finding the smith too drunk to assist him this evening.

Other gamers that have not posted in a while are found spread out throughout town, tending to their own private business. They are considered town NPCs if encountered at this time, managed by the DM.

Of course, Oley and Vindson are town NPCs managed by their own writers (Morgie and dplax). Edward Locke is the NPC of Cyril, my co-DM.

And just who are the two strangers that are in the Guest Wing???

Locke Manor – Guest Wing

He's fine...I hope...I guess I'll just leave him here to sleep it off...poor guy got involved in my mess and now look at him! I nearly killed him!

It had been a long day. He took a good look around the room just once more to ensure that everything was okay and turned down the lantern-light that was hanging from the wall. He turned toward the door, opened it and creeped outside, trying to close the door quietly so as to not create a creak that would wake his exausted friend.

Now out in the hallway of some stranger's home...he begin to wonder just how he would explain his presence here to the unknowing hosts if they came inquiring...

Maybe Jeannette will not even think to tell anyone...and they can sneak out in the morning. I mean...this place is huge! There's a possibility that nobody living here would even have reason to come into this part of the house...

As is his custom, he was content to remain silent and observant through the initial exchanges of pleasantries. Simon, afterall, is much better in such informal gatherings as these and there is much that an observant eye and an attentive ear might glean when given the opportunity to take the measure of how others respond in a setting that is at once cordial and a bit unfamiliar. The debt of gratitude that he and his brother owe these men is considerable – but if they are to be fittingly compensated he must know something about them. And, furthermore, if they are to be trusted with other matters it will not do to simply content oneself with viewing them as heroic strangers.

Indeed, how is it that so many strangers have managed to converge on so quiet a town as this in recent days? Surely there is more than convenient happenstance at work here. He signals that a better vintage of wine be brought to the table. And then there is the matter of what I have heard from Ariella.....

Jeannette arrives as fresh wine glasses are placed on the table and filled. There is no reason for her to be here and so he leans forward with interest as she begins to speak. “Very good, Jeannette,” he says simply. No guests were expected, nor were any invited save these two, but it would not be good form to indicate surprise. One must keep a cool head about such things. “Simon, would you please be sure to keep our visitors well-fed and entertained. My apologies, gentlemen, but I must go and greet our new arrivals. I shall return shortly.”

Simon Locke

Simon stood slightly from his chair as his brother left the table, giving the other two gentlemen glances that they do likewise.

"Where was I? Oh right...Pandaros. It is my understanding that the both of you are to be thanked for your combined efforts today in stopping those criminals, and assisting our town in its dark hour.

I want to ask the both of you, where might your destinations be? What plans have you in the following weeks?"

Simon took a sip of his wine, and set back in his seat, looking from Pandaros back to Sever.

Pandaros

Pandaros watched Jeannette's body language as the scene unfolded involving the other two guests. It was apparent that something was amiss, yet judging by the lack of reaction from the Lockes he supposed it was nothing of great importance.

"None of my business anyway," he thought to himself. "So long as the house isn't on fire."

He turned to face Simon in response to Simon's question.

"I'm planning on heading north, although I was hoping to spend a few days relaxing in town before I head out. My stay here so far has hardly been relaxing, however. Luckily I'm not on a hurried timetable, so I can wait here until I'm ready to move on."

Simon Locke

Simon nodded his head, taking in his guest's response. He wondered about these adventurous folk, always traveling to distant lands, seeking something...wealth, happiness, a chance to become famous...what drove these men to risk their lives in the wilderness? What drove these particular men that sat at this table?

"Our town is honored by your visit and may your stay be relaxing as you desire."

He turned now to Sever, expecting a similar response.

"And you sir?"

Xaver

ZZZZZzzzzzZZZZZzzzzz

Xaver woke with a start. The inn was on fire. Xaver looked around, tried to get out, to find the exit, but flames have engulfed the room and were all around him. Suddenly he saw a figure in his room and realized he was not alone. A child was crying loudly for help. Xaver tried to shout to the child, but couldn't get a word out of his mouth. He instinctively reached for his belt for his axe, but that was lying on a chest nearby. He walked to the child and as he approached him saw that he wasn't a child but a grown man, a fat man. The man smiled a strange smile and said "No need to worry about me. I could care less, as long as I get my pay...which I have. Want anything while you're waiting? Some coffee or something?" Suddenly the man seemed to shrink. "I'm Vallo the Incompetent, Vallo the Foolish, I'm Vallo the Arch-Mage, weilder of magic." shouted the shrinking figure, while a shadow seemed to fall on it from above, till it disappeared completely below it. The shadows slowly took shape and formed a figure. A figure of an elf. An elf wearing the symbol of Mystra. "In the name of-" he said. "You're not the one either. You can't help me in my quest. You weren't chosen by Mystra..."

Xaver woke with a start. The inn was in darkness. Xaver looked around, tried to get out, to find the exit, but darkness have engulfed the room and was all around him.

He remembered he had a dream but for the life of him couldn't recall anything. Not a single detail from it. He lay down and thought about it. His lids grew heavy...

Sever

Sever made a show of making himself comfortable in his seat as he responded to Simon.

"Me? I've seen more action in this one day than a whole month back in my home city. Not that action doesn't occur, mind you. It's just that it doesn't seem to involve itself with me.

I gather that Lockesville is, by and large, a very quiet town. I am most certainly looking forward to seeing the pleasant side of quiet in the coming weeks. My destination for the time being, is right here."

After learning from Jeanette the few things she was able to report about these two visitors, one of whom has clearly impressed her greatly, he sends the maid on an errand to another part of the manner grounds. He is unsure what to make of the maid’s report – the degree of presumption is simply stunning! He is sure, however, that he does not want any rumors to spread before he has had a chance to ascertain the nature of the situation. Sending the girl away without indicating any problem is clearly the wise course to take. He rings the porter’s bell and leaves instructions for two of the manor guards to meet him in the guest wing.

As the porter leaves to relay the instructions, Edward opens the door to the guest wing and enters the hallway.

Locke Manor – Guest Wing

He heard the door opening, and realized that his hopes of quietly sleeping the night away in this not-too-shabby dwelling had quickly dissapated into panic of being hung from the gallows by morning. He wanted to squeak his fear, but bit his tongue. There, the door stood open and all he had to to was dart in, close it, and hide. Could he do so, and not be noticed? If the person coming into the hallway saw the door close...would they think nothing of it? He had to try, anyway. fruitless as it might seem.

He leaped into the room, and closed the door behind him, ran over towards the back of the room, and tried to find a place to hide. The bed was too low to craw under. The closet? Yes! The closet! He darted into the closet and shut the door behind him.

Now all he had to do was control his breathing.

Calm down! Calm...calm....calm...breathe in...hold...hold...breathe out...okay...think...puppies...puppies...breathe.. .
