So I just saw Hero today... finally. I liked it. Great blend of story and action, IMO, although some of the fight sequences were a bit too contrived for my taste.

But it got me thinking - what are the "best" martial arts flicks out there? I haven't seen as many as want to, so I'm looking for more good ones.

You can define "best" any way you like: all-out action, style, skill, etc.

I'm still mulling over my list, but it would have to include at least one each from Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Jet Li.

Once upon a time in china.. good stuff - jet lee

jackie chan makes good martial arts movies.. especially when its comedy

bruce lee - it may look corney without any special effects but what you see there is what bruce lee can do without any acting (he is a terrible actor to be honest)

its pretty funny since i just saw bruce lee "enter the dragon" just shown as a friday night movie ..

If "Kill Bill 1 & 2" count as MA movies, I say they belong on the list (they were intended to be just one movie, but QT split them up).

The movie pays so many homages to kung fu TV and movies, that it just has to make it.

"Enter the Dragon" is my favorite Bruce Lee flick.

If you don't mind reading subtitles, definitely see anything by Akira Kurisowa. Incredible films, at least the ones I've seen. George Lucas' "Star Wars" was loosley based on "The Hiudden Fortress," but my favorite of his films is "The Seven Samurai."

I'm tempted the mention a bunch of Chinese/Hong Kong martial arts films since they are the true thing, but for some reason the American made movies are the ones that have stuck out to me over the years (except for CTHD).

Bloodsport - the best kickass movie ever
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - masterful in every way
Best of the Best - I actually cried at the end
The Karate Kid - an American classic
The Hunted - the train scene is just awesome
