Oh that question is too easy. Start with The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, and The Halflings Gem. Then go to the Dark Elf Trilogy, then the hard backs. This happens to be publishing order instead of time line, but it is also how the chars develop.

I have to agree, even though the dark elf trilogy->icewind dale trilogy is how it works in cronology, the books are better to see the developement of how drizzt is written and how his archnemesis's (sp?) come into his life, the dark elf trilogy is the first appearance of the infamous letters drizzt writes that depict his thoughts on things happening in the books, and it might leave you wondering why they weren't in the IWD trilogy, they are sorely missed in a rereading, as they add alot, at least for personal reflection., and they tell a good substory.

basically the IWD books give the meat and bones to drizzt, the dark elf books add an introspective glimpse of why he is who he is.

You must start at Dark elf Trilogy!
It's important cause then you know something about drizzt, what he has done in his early age.
In icewind dale trilogy drizzt get back to things he done and knowing it helps to understand him.
Same thing is when you have read icewind dale trilogy. move on Drows legacy...

I like Dark elf trilogy best...
Read also Elaine Cunningham!
She wrote about Liriel Baenre, but read D elf trilogy first!
