... Anyone here having read her books ? I never seem to see anyone mentioning her, and I am a big fan of the Valdemar series.

I've read Bardic Voices. It was good but never could find the rest of the series at the time. Still have it though!

She has written the Valdemar series (a HUGE lot of books, split in several trilogies - and her writing got better with every new book), and the Bardic voices series, plus a lot of other books (I haven't read them all).

Among the Valdemar books, you have to start with the "Arrows" trilogy - not the best, but you have to if you want to understand the rest of the series. The "Wind" trilogy is positively brilliant. I am currently re-reading "By the sword" for the 3rd time - one of my favourites.

Hello Moriaine!

I haven't read any of Lackey's novels as of yet, but I intend to check out some soon. However, I have a question. I've been told by more than a few of my compatriots that the problem they have with her writing is that she is *very* heavy on the feminism messages. Do you find this to be true? I don't mind a subtle message, but I read for enjoyment and don't like to be beaten over the head by an underlying concept. I get especially tired of stories that spend 90% of the time depressing me by discussing how a certain demographic (race, creed, gender, religious belief, etc.) is being kept down.

Can you either confirm or deny the belief of my associates?

Thanks!

Hi Throntar ! Good question. My answer would be that it is both true and false. When you read her books, it is clear that she is *heavy* (as you say !) about the fact that everyone should have the right to fulfill his/her own destiny. Women, of course, but also gays, ... BUT she never whines, the way M.Z. Bradley does, never. You meet a bunch of strong female characters, true, but you never meet a woman put in a situation of awful and unrealistic abuse. She creates a very positive and energetic and humourous and happy atmosphere, and all characters are interesting, males and females both. Even Gryphons ! (The Black Gryphon, THAT one is a character I am glad I have met !).

What she really is *heavy* on is not strictly feminism, to me, it is more the stating that people can and should get along even if they are widely different, in sexes, races, beliefs - much like we do here on this Board !
Try to read her books without being prejudiced, you should love them.

Moiraine! Yes! I have read every book she's written except the bard tales ones. I tried the first two of those and they just didn't grab me. But her Valdemar tales are my very favorite!! The "Arrows" trilogy were the first to captivate me, but I also like the "Gryphon" ones too. Oh heck, I like them all.

So you are not alone in being a fan of M.L.
