ok, when I start up baldurs Gate it has an Assertion right when I click play so I'm not even in the game, it says:

Assertion
An Assertion failed in D:\Dev\Baldur\InfGame.cpp at line number 2316

the funny thing is my D drive is an empty harddrive and my cd drive is E drive, it doesn't even try to read from the right drive and it doesn't seem like it tries to read from the D drive either... the first thing I tried was re-installing the game but that didn't do anything... I am thinking, can this be because I am running under Windows ME? I have played the game several times with no errors under Windows 98 and it seems like Win ME is giving me problems with anything else too... well please help me, I love BG

EDIT: Watch your language please mate, particularly in your title. Cheers.

This might not be any help at all but when i used Windows ME it always crashed and bugged my aplications. If you can i would recommend you to upgrade to XP.

First of all, I dont think that the title of this thread is quite appropriate, swearing is frowned upon here.

Anyway, I have a question, did you un-install the game originally, or did you just delete the folder that it was in, because it could be just a few reqistry keys hanging around on your computer, so the program may be looking for files where they used to be.

Sorry to hear of your problems. Try to open the baldur.ini file, which is in the main directory of the game. It contains a heading called [Alias] where all paths are set.
It should look something like this:
[Alias]
HD0:=C:\games\bgate\
CD1:=E:\CD1\
CD2:=E:\CD2\
CD3:=E:\CD3\
CD4:=E:\CD4\
CD5:=E:\CD5\
CD6:=E:\CD6\

Where HD0 is the game path (might very well be different in your case) and E is the cd drive.
If everything is in order in this file I sadly think I cannot help.

Based on what I've read in the bioware help section, most assertion failures are due to file corruption. You may want to attempt a reinstall.

Yeah thanks, but I solved the problem, I deleted my temp folder and then I could start the game again, but it crashed when I tried to open my save game, I found out it was because the same game was read only, I had transportet it from my computer to my parents and back using a cdrw which made the files read only :S well I deleted the temp files again and unclicked the read only thingy in the files and it worked out... so I am happy again... sorry for swearing too btw, just got a bit upset over this...

I've got a similar assertion error - D:\Dev\Baldur\CPathSearch.cpp at line number 724.
I'm in the catacombs under Candlekeep.

I have the 5 CD BG & single CD ToTSC expansion. I've downloaded the ToTSC & DX8 patches with no improvement. I've heard that deleting the cache can help. If so,where do I find the cache to delete it (I'm not very tech savvy). Also, if I uninstall & reinstall will I lose my saved games?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i'm no expert but i had the odd assertion error

someone who knows told me that graphics is the main problem - sometimes you can get round it / over it by just trying (in the game) to do something differently

reinstalling fixed it for me eventuall when i took the option to install the version of DirectX that came on the game disks (i play no other computer games so i don't know if this might mess anything else up)

uninstalling/reinstalling shouldn't affect your save files but you can always make a copy of them just in case and then copy them back to the 'Save' folder if you get a problem

good luck

If all else fails, you could try changing the CD drive's letter. Information about it can be found from Microsoft Knowledge Base. I have no idea if that works (I have XP) or if it, if working, helps for the actual problem. You could still try it, though.

I'll have a go at reinstalling it & see if that helps.
