I am just starting IWD2 and I have tried unsuccessfully to import characters from IWD and HoW. Can it be done? or must I re-create these guys?
Also I am not overly impressed with the stat combinations I get with new characters. All stats starting at 10, with 16 points to dole among them, leaves for some pretty mediocre or deficient characters. Are there ways in the game to permanently up stats on all of my characters? or is there a way to roll yer own? I don't really want to have a band of fugly heroes. |

I';m afraid you can't import characters. sorry.
it's because iwd2 uses 3rd edition d&d rules so the characters from iwd1 can't be supported. [ 12-04-2002, 05:07 PM: Message edited by: Desdicado ]

Terl,
The stats just LOOK awful. The 3E stat progression gives you better modifiers for LOWER equivalent stats than do the old 2E rules. With strength for example, you now get a +1 to hit and damage with a stat of 12 in 3E whereas before you needed a 16! Similiarly, you now get bonus clerical spells for wisdom starting at 12! Also MAGES now get bonus spell slots for intelligence at 12 or greater! Don't be too quick to dismiss the apparently lower stats in 3E rules in IWD2. You'll find that you can still have a truly potent adventuring party.

Also, a character with one single ability score to 18 is VERY impressive. Two is almost impossible, so those points they give you are pretty good.
There is a reason for that limit in points, and it's called balance.

Balance-shmalance Jaheira! The mediocre should stay at home. The reason that there a whole bunch of fat monsters out there is that they are kept fed by armies of mediocre advenrurers.
I was happier before when you knew your stats and chose your profession accordingly. In any case are there ample ops for raising stats in the game? |

As for raising stats during the game, YES. Starting at 4th level and every 4 levels after that you get one point to put in your stats (this is in addition to the points you get every turn to raise your skills and additional feats). PLUS there are potions which can permanently enhance your stats as well AND items which also adjust your stats.

You can also do what many others have done, namely min/max the stats for your characters. While everything starts at 10, you can take points off and bring them down to 3 (or lower in some cases), and use those points elsewhere. This is easiest to do to with pure fighters. They have no skills worth mentioning, so most will bring int down to 3 and put the 7 points into strength and con.
It's a bit trickier with other classes, and especially if you want to multi, but it can be done. Not a great solution. I prefer dice rolls myself, but the designers went with an adaptation of an optional char gen rule in 3rd ed. |

Yes I am one of those filthy min/maxr's! I higly recomend it! For fighters int and charaisma should be 3! For Clerics and Druids SAME! cept the race should be human to get 2 skill points per level up. Sorcerers should have there wisdom gimped ALL the way down. Sorcerers get pretty good will saves to begin with so it wont hurt you that much and if you put in one or two levels of paladin your will saves will actualy end even with your other saves bcause of the charisma bonus. They should be in the high 20's at level 30. Check this out.
Human Sorcerer28/Paladin2 Lawful Good -starting stats Str 18 Dex 16 Con 18 Int 3 Wis 3 Cha 18 He actualy makes a decent self buffing fighter. I like to use him with conjured weapons and armor. He is also MASTER of the cheapest tactic in the game: Cast Firesheild Red and Firesheild Blue then Otilukes Resilient Sphere or Iron Skins... Then he lets the enemy commit suicide by hitting him till they die. He has Sprit of Flame and the ice equivalent so he does EXTRA damage on top of the regular. fun fun fun From a role playing point of veiw I ENJOY the fact that his stats make him about as dumb as a stick, but he is the most powerful character in my current party. heheheh

Importing......
I really misses my Paladin from the IWD 1. I had won the game with him 3 times and he has the great PALE JUSTICE sword that makes him a great TANK !!! I miss him very much......not to mention my preferred fighter mage ... I am not convinced by 3rd ed rules...... Back to old times, when AD & D were meant for guys not kids....... Sorry about by harsh words Ed
