I suppose it's possible to do BG1 without mages but some of the fights involving mages are easier delt with when having one around. You can use a bard with hight lore to identify stuff but it is easier with a mage.
I'm trying to solo with a F/M/T in a game including TotSC and DSotSC and since DSotSC removes the XP cap he's level 9/10/11 right now IIRC with about 800.000 XP (no cheating as such.. a bit of sleight of hand one might say perhaps). I haven't had any problems as yet but of course I'm only in Cloakwood III.
