I'm planning to start a new game of SoA soon and am looking for some advice on creating a new character. The first time I played, I used a female mage with lawful good alignment. I'm not ready to play bad yet (wuss, I know), so plan to make the character a true neutral and male (more romance opportunities). The question is, should he be a fighter, a paladin, a cleric, what? I've never dual-classed, so wouldn't mind trying that. What would be the best way to go about that. I enjoy using spells, so don't think I could be a true fighter. Any suggestions?

If you know the spell system and like magic in the game go with the Sorcerer. If not,I suggest that you try Cavalier(Paladin kit) wich is great becuase of the immunities he gets. If you are going to be a Fighter be Berserker.

Have ToB? Want some real fun? Make this party:

1) Inquisitor
2) Kensai/Mage
3) WizardSlayer/Thief
4) Berserker/Cleric

Else, like Xen said: Sorcerer

or

Figher/Mage - Fighter/Mage/Thief

Yup, I have ToB. One question about dual-classing a character: when's the best time to do that? What level?

Depends on the combo. With ToB installed, you can wait until level 20+ before dualling over in most combos. If you are soloing, then it is a little easier (other characters aren't "sucking up" your xp). If in a party, then you probably want to dual a little earlier.

If you really want to play magic, but want to combine in other abilities through a dualclass, then consider the fighter/mage and thief/mage dualclasses. Kensai/mage is notorious for its power, but also berserker/mage and wizard slayer/mage are pretty good, too. For the thief/mage, swashbuckler/mage is great, but assassin/mage is not bad, either.

You could also consider multiclassing (very powerful once you get to ToB levels), or just pureclass (try a conjurer or a sorcerer).

In other words, it is your choice; just look over the options, find something that appeals to you, and go with it.

true neutral kinda screams druid but you might not fancy that and they're not great fighters which you say you want - you say you like spells though and the druid spells rock and roll they really do

you've already tried a mage - so that also suggests cleric or druid

you'd like to dual-class

all of your female romance options are at least part cleric or druid so you need to be flexible with your spell choices - ideally you'd be able to choose 'cleric' spells if you're romancin' a druid and 'druid' spells if you're romancing a cleric

you want a ranger dualled to cleric

As Armen said, true neutral screams Druid. If you're not afraid of a tough dual-class to roll, how about Berserker/Druid? Make a True Neutral Human Berserker (Fighter kit) with 15 str, 17 wis, 17 cha minimum. Hellaciously difficult to roll if you also insist on good dex & con and want your intelligence out of the imbecile range (EX: 15, 18, 18, 6, 18, 17 = 92, which is VERY tough to roll), but if you're willing to compromise on one attribute (probably dex) it won't be that bad. (EX: 15, 9, 18, 6, 18, 17 = 83, which is much easier.) You can either go dual-wield style with Clubs and Scimitars (or Daggers, although I usually use them as ranged weapons), or two-handed style with Staffs and Spears.

The Ranger/Cleric, either dualclass or multiclass, is in most respects more powerful since you get better weapon selection and better spell selection... plus it's easier to roll the character in the first place. Rangers must be good only, though, so if you insist on True Neutral that option's out.

If you're doing a Fighter/X dual-class with TOB, the best level to dual-class is at level 13, which gives you your full Fighter attacks when you regain your Fighter abilities. Also, for dual-classes involving Clerics and Druids remember to be sure to pick weapon proficiencies that will be legal for both classes or you will lose them permanently when you dual-class. This forum's FAQ has much more dual-classing info if you're interested... you should definitely read it thoroughly before rolling a character you intend to dual-class.

Actually, don't drop dex for the fighter/druid dual, drop con. Who needs it, with a fighter's HP, you'll have enough. A score of 15,17,10,12,17,17 ain't THAT hard

I didn't realize true neutral meant I should be a druid. I'm certainly flexible on my character's alignment, although I'd like him to be neutral somehow.
