Whats up with the mods?

I have finished BG1 and am starting on BG2 with ToB add on. It seems to be playing well so Im curious as to why all the mod and patch questions? Do I need them? What are they all about?

as for patches. even if you have ToB installed, you need to install the latest ToB patches. If you don't have all the latest patches, sooner or later you'll see bugs in the course of the game.

You should get the patches and the Baldurdash fixpacks no matter what. I would advise againt mods on your first run through. They spice up the game, and add new stuff, but most are for veterans, and you should learn the beauty of the plain game first.

The patches and the fixpack fix a lot of bugs in the game. Check the baldurdash page and the official BG SoA/ToB page to see what was fixed/altered. Many, many small things that you wouldn't notice, until you've become more familiar/experienced at the game are fixed, so it's really necessary to get the full monty out of the game.
