Default Home Gardners "Shallots"

As I gain in age and taste, many unexplored recipes are calling for shallots. Thou they can be purchased at the commissary (grocery store) they are quite expensive for their small size, on the other hand, their taste is almost worth their weight in gold.

Does anybody here grow them in their backyard garden?

Most of my seeds come from Johnny's selected seeds. They have both seed packets, and bulbs, but am hesitant to order this late in the season.

Similar to a green onion. But I think it has a milder taste.

EDIT: sorry, I was thinking scallions. Shallots are more like something between an onion and garlic.

Here's the wiki-article on shallots: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shallots

Seems it is indeed a bit late to plant them. Says they should be planted between February and early March.

Maybe try a few in an indoor planter? Early or late season shouldn't matter then...
