Hi there, I just bought the game two days ago. Yesterday, I installed it (full install) and played for some hours, experiencing no performance problems at all. Today, eager to continue my explorations, I reloaded my saved game and couldnīt believe my eyes: The game lags so badly itīs quite a torture to play. It is worst when monsters appear, but even without monsters itīs no fun. I didnīt change any configurations, didnīt install any new programs, my whole system is exactly like I left it yesterday. I didnīt even change to a new location, Iīm still in lower monastery. I tried a few things, of course: Quitting and reentering the game, shutting down my computer and rebooting, changing resolution ( going down from 800x600 to 614x480 ) and graphic details, all to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this ?
Btw: My System is a AMD K6-2 450MHz with 256 MB Ram . OS Win98SE. Wiz8 is installed in a 4,87 GB partition with 1,5 GB still free.

You really should consider upgrading your processor.. 450mhz? I mean, come on!

I noticed that the game takes longer time loading when I have more save games.. I had about 250-300 savegames (over 50 pages of saves) first time I played the game. I've learned to overwrite savegames now, and I only have about 70-80 savegames.. The loading times between the main menu and the "load"-section is shorter than before. Try moving some of your savegames to a backup-folder instead of having them clutter up your system, by having them in your /savegame-directory.

But you should really upgrade.. I bought my 1ghz about 6-8 months ago, and it cost me about 160$ here in Norway.. I imagine it's way cheaper now.

What you shouldn't do, is upgrade to anything less. If you think "well, 800mhz sounds nice", then don't upgrade at all. It'll be rotting away in a couple of weeks, just like your 450mhz started rotting away a couple of months ago .. Better to upgrade _once_ and do it properly, instead of having to upgrade all the time.

Just my advice.

Well, thanks for the advice, I myself realized some time ago that 450 MHz are no longer state of the art =) The system reqirements for wiz8 recommend a 233 MHz though, so with 450 MHz you should be able to play the game, shouldnīt you. And as I already said, yesterday the game went smoothly, today it lags. Or rather did, since I have found the reason for it in the meantime: Obviously, my sound card is no longer state of the art either =) Hearing very faint crackles and distortions, I tried muting all sounds and voilá: graphics are smooth again.

I've not had such problems with a less capable system. Mine is a PII/266 with 128 MB, Win ME. You did not mention your graphics card and sound card -- which may well have bigger impact than processor speed. My video was upgraded once to a Voodoo 3 and I've got the original sound Yamaha sound card. Both of these seem to fit with Directx 8.0 though.

You said that you tried working with the video settings -- that does sound like a good area to focus on. Have you looked at hardware vs software acceleration for 3D effects?

If you don't want to overwrite your savegames, just go in and move most of the older ones to a new folder every once in a while. That way you still have the saves but don't experience the lag. I try to keep my main savegame folder to under 10 pages of saves and normally the only older ones I leave in there are the ones when I am just about to enter a new area.

Geathaa: Try re-running the Video/Sound test from the start menu. Maybe change it to Direct X, and then back.

And for everyone else, just remember, a K6-2 with 256MB is just as good as any P3 with 128MB Ram, it's all in the video card. My worst lag was on Win ME and this is my Athlon 800. It had 128MB, 32MB nVidia card and it had a lot of lag problems.

Now I'm upgraded to Win2k, 224MB Ram (still waiting for a good deal on ebay for more ram). Switched to Direct X7 from OpenGL and it runs so much better... but I noticed that the fonts in the dialogue box changed... hmmmm.

Maybe you have something running in the background? All games are resource hogs, and it's best to shut down any apps that aren't necessary when playing.

The monastery should be one of the smoothest-running parts of the game, because there's few monsters around, and not that much pressure on the video.
