I'm in crypt. Can't retrieve crystal from behind the grate. Can't open the "something required" door. Can't leave due to broken staircase. What am I supposed to be doing?

You need the Bauble (?) stick to get the crystal. You use the crystal on the "something required" door, you have to jump to get over the broken staircase (numpad 0).

Open the chest in the room near Rethpian and get the bauble stick. "Use" the stick to get the crystal beyond the underwater grate, and then use the crystal on the slot near the carved door in the round room up the stairs from the water.

You definitely need the crystal to continue in the game. If you talked to Rethpian, he said something about a bauble stick. That's what you need to get the crystal. The stick is close by, near Rethpian, find it and use it. If you need more diection, post again!
