Yes, you have to rescue the kid. I believe you said in your last post that you are without a thief. That's OK as per the reply you got. Also, a good strategy for that vampire room is to send your lead character, or minsc if you've got him, toward the room until you uncover only one or two. Pull back, kill it/them, then repeat till finished.
