UK did one of those! It was called 'The Initial Teaching Alphabet' and was introduced to infant schools to help kids read faster..... only trouble was they then had to learn to read all over again when they got to junior school, and had regular reading books. And none of 'em could spell for toffee. My eldest was taught it and it took her YEARS to learn to spell properly.
