PS:T is non-violent in that you can achieve most things by talking to people about it, instead of killing people about it. And, generally speaking, talking is more rewarding. Sure, you can kill everything that moves, and watch body parts splatter all over your screen, but Torment encourages you not to.
The ideas in it wouldn't realy be all that hard to understand. Ok, for a 5-year-old, sure, reincarnation mightn't be a very thought=provoking thing. But a 10-year-old probably would understand most of it. It's not like Torment has any strong political statements in it. The only things that a 10-year-old wouldn't understan are the more obscure jokes, but find me one game (other than Super Mario Brothers and similar) that isn't riddled with obscure references to something. Even games as old as Quest for Glory I have them. Although QFG 5 only had the blatanly obvious jokes, the only semi-obscure one being "By the pricking of your thumbs, something stupid nearby comes".
