In Canada we have a lobby group of accountants who calculate how long you have to work every year to pay the government bills.
They add up the income taxes, property taxes, licences, duties, fees etc. and come up with an amount. The accountants then figure if you did nothing but pay all the taxes starting January 1st, when would you start working for yourself.
They call it Tax Freedom Day. It varies from province to province but in Ontario I believe we start working for ourselves around July 23rd…
