Several years ago (OK more than several, like in the early to mid 1990's), the executive managers of the national offices of The United Way were arrested for embezzlement of United Way funds. 5 cents on the dollar was all that made it out of their offices to actually fund the charitable work they claimed they do and they were pulling in millions, mainly through payroll deductions.
Know who you are giving to by having it go straight from your hand into the hand of the needy. That way you can be sure anything you give is gotten by those who need it.
Just because two or three top officials were busted does not mean they were not replaced by people in the same racket.
