Alaric had it right. The Ioun stone is a reward for completing the statue/item puzzle. The ring of regeneration was the reward for solving the 12 (?) riddles in the opposite room (with all the faces on the wall)
IIRC there was also a Ioun stone of luck in BG1, though I can't recall where it was found. (something with a squirrel?)
