You'll have to beat her a total of four times. When she nears defeat, the game won't let her die. A dialogue saying that she must have more power should start and she'll go back to the power stream in the middle. You should then proceed to the bottom right pool, beat the guardians, and cut off the stream. You will then face Mellissan again with tougher critters, go to the next pool counter clockwise, etc. This cycle will continue until all three pools have been cut off and you beat her a final time. A solar will appear and initiate a dialogue that determines the end game sequence.
