That's weird. The key sould work.
If you want to pick the lock then you will need:
either a thief class (thief, assassin, barbarian, etc.) lockpicker with high Traps and Locks skill. Level 5 lockpicks can also help. A non-thief class lockpicker will fail even with Traps and Locks 12.
or a spellcaster which can cast Disarm Traps spell and has high Sorcery skill (at least 10, I think)
or a zenmaster with Traps and Locks 14.
