Back when I played D&D(long before 3rd edition came out), I made up several character classes, one of which was the ninja, who was essentially a super-class, but he took nearly 3 times as long to level. My personal favorite was the demon mage, who was like a demon-worshipping priest, with the added ability of being able to turn into a minor demon. Downside was you had to make periodic checks against posession. Btw, the Wizardry series of computer games have both ninjas and samurai as player classes.
