Depending on your character class, you can temporarily increase your character's attributes:
Warrior - Amazon - use Concentration skill (+ to hit, + to ac, + to damage) and Berserker (My level 50 warrior gains life points almost 5 times faster with berserker on)
Monk / Priestess: Prayer will increase your AC.
Sorceress / Wizard: Meditation increases Mana and may (with berserker) allow faster mana recovery.
Thief / Assassin: ?????
