Yes, I did have a similar problem. Unfortunately, there isn't really an easy solution to it. What it's coming up against is not enough memory or resources. Battles are the most intensive of processor time. If you have ANYTHING running in the background, it would help to close it out. Also, you may want to adjust your setup program to give you a slower computer and possibly less graphics. Depends on what you can live with or without. The squawk that you are hearing is the sound card portion of the program crashing. It is running with the last available sound and then it will do one of two things. It will either continue ad infinitum or it will just die out. Something else that could help you is to play the battle with the autopause feature on. This may or may not help depending on how many resources that you have tied up. And if you are playing in 800x600 mode, that definitely kills resources, you may want to change to 640x480 and try running it that way.
