To enter the sphere you need Valygar (either as a member of your party or as a dead body - item in the inventory) because he is the living key. Inside you do some stuff, end up killing Valygar's uncle, who created the damn sphere and if you are a mage or sorcerer you get the sphere as a stronghold.
