To acquire the Staff of the Magi, you have a pretty hard fight. There is a "secret" entrance in the Bridge District of Athkatla, and you need a Rogue Stone to pass through (you can buy one from Gorch, in Mae'Var's Guildhall, as well as finding one on the second floor behind the last "practice door" that looks like a submarine door, top right).

Once you find the right door to enter in the Bridge District (set of buildings SW of the Tanner), which will be indicated by a locked door which opens "into nothingness" you will be transported into a purplish room, if you have a Rogue Stone. Now be sure you can handle it, as the Stone is used up, and you can't leave until you win the fight (or at least, kill the Beholder who's eye is the key out of there...).

Your enemies include: Shangalar (a lich), a Beholder, a Vampire, a human Wizard (with the Staff of the Magi), and a nasty Thief who likes to run around and backstab.

If you have at least 1 mage, I recommend a very simple tactic. You need a Cloudkill Wand (5+ charges), a Scroll of Protection from Magic, and a Scroll of Protection from Undead.

Both the lich and wizardess have Timestop and Gate spells, but your PfM scroll will negate any other protection spells, so forget about PfE. What I do is set up Cloudkill casting from memory around the "round table", usually 2 castings, one at either end, then walk forward to trigger the lich's appearance. All his cronies will be in the Cloudkill and taking damage, and Shangalar himself will Dimension Door himself into the alcove you appear in. As soon as the lich does his dialog, read the PfU scroll and he'll ignore you, then read the PfM scroll, and just about everything will not affect you.

Most likely, both the lich and the wizardess will cast Timestop and Gate/Meteor Swarm, but they're pretty stupid and don't use PfE so end up hacking to death their own summons. Eventually the Beholder, Thief, and Wizardess will fall to your Cloudkill (keep saturating the area from the wand), and then the lich and vampire will ignore you due to the PfU scroll. At that point, your mage with the Staff of Rynn or Magi can lay flat both of them.

Hope that helps...
