You sound like you have the same problem a lot of Windows 2000 users are having... If this is, in fact, the OS you use then you can do the following:
#1 Download and install a program called VirtualDub
#2 Use VirtualDub to open all of the AVI files in your /townavi/ folder
#3 Save the files using the OLD AVI FORMAT - this will bloat the 1 meg files to about 32 meg.
#4 Delete or rename the original AVI files and replace them with the 'new' files - make sure to keep track of what the names should be so you can
rename the 'new' files correctly.
#5 Load up your savegame and get the heck out of Ishad'nahaha!
