All I can bring forth is that 'WINSOCK" = Windows sockets. These sockets are the ones that the spammers, and virual manipulators attept to attack from the internet. WinXP, even after SP2 was released to the public has open sockets.

There are numerous free programs available to 'fix these issues'. However, my personal concern is that you are using a program to fix something that was altered by a program. This in itself may seem circular, however, we are talking straight line, the internet connection socket was breeched. And that is wherein lies the issue of who's who on the internet.

Personally I would reformat and re-install. Reason being this WINSOCK error deals directly with her PC based on the internet. So, if you get it recovered now, how long before she is the unknowing host to a long list of bad names?
Also, get her up and running a firewall, I presume we all can afford free, and it doesn't take much to set up and run.
