My professional opinion? Start a new game with a mage/thief and don't allow any NPC's to join (SOLO Baby Yeah!). But, you want that dang ranger thing huh. Well, you could start a multi-player game and use the serial connection (faster loading) and just create your own characters for everyone. How about a ranger for the leader and mage/thief as second hand man. Then, you get the best character in the game (mage/thief) and you still get the ranger quests.
Also, you could still have 4 NPC's join if you really must!
