You guys missed the bit that the store OWNER is the one who accused him. Can't go over his head.
I worked for a privately-owned grocery as a bagger, cashier, and stock boy, so I sorta know what he means. I saw others get in trouble for stealing. They always did it in private, of course.
You should know that a grocery store operates on a 1% profit margin. If someone steals a candy bar, the store generally has to sell the whole box just to break even. Imagine what taking a $20 from the till is like. They are very antsy about theft.
That said, I do agree that you should question them and ask for proof. If you feel like it, offer to prove up your innocence -- but it is not your responsibility to do so.
