Ancient Lore allows you to develop Artifacts, either when you level up or in the Temple priest guild. Once you've done that you will be able to identify some items by choosing the first option on right-clicking them.
Exactly the same for Blacksmith and Forge, but warriors guild.
Scout seems to be used automatically, once you have it at a reasonable level - swim down pirahna-infested water and a text message pops up "a pirahna has been here". Not very useful!
