If you have someone that you want to talk to or send messages to regularly, it's a great tool. It's also a great tool for moderators - that way we no longer have to publicly embarrass other people who may have accidentally done the wrong thing (release a spoiler for example).
Trolls and flamers will STILL be publicly flogged, of course.
