I remember a version of the story in which the Rat hid in the mane of the Ox, who was determined to get to the gathering first. Right before the Ox crossed the line, the Rat jumped down and skittered on in front, therefore winning the "first" position. The Rat represents the Thief, the Rogue, and the Trickster, and it is interesting that the archetype of "Divine Thief" is the first in the Chinese system.
