That is because you are fighting against a AI Mage.
Play against a human Sorcerer though... and heh heh heh... ...
At lower levels, a Cavalier is stronger than a Sorcerer. This is true. Once the Sorcerer attains level 18 though... the Sorcerer will chew the Cavalier out.
