The invoke option is only available if you are currently capable of learning that spell. My paladin is level 9, with level 7 spirit and level 6 vine. I have a couple of level 5 vine spells, but will not be able to invoke them till I get to level 10 (ie my paladin can only pick up the vine spells till level 4 at present - half level value).
