The computer is trying to get an IP from somewhere. The ideal case would be a DHCP server in the router. If you have a router, try resetting it. Tried serveral times....

Otherwise, windows will try and sort things out on its own. And personaly, I'd rather let a small child sort it out than windows.

Far safer is to specify static IPs for each computer. The numbers you need are:

A unique IP for each computer. There are various ranges set aside for LAN use, of which the one you probably want to use is 192.168.0.0 through to 192.168.255.255. That gives you addresses of 192.168.0.0, 192.168.0.1 and so on. Standard is for the router to be on the last usable address in the subnet, which is 192.168.0.254. I am really feeling pretty stupid right about now....because I have no clue how to use these numbers....

The subnet mask. Use 255.255.255.0 with the first range I gave above.

The default gateway should be the IP of the internet. connection. Either the inside IP of the router, or the IP of the PC using Internet Connection Sharing, or whatever.
