I think you only need two pegs, if you've got someone with decent Athletics. I can't remember if I had two or three.
Oh, for getting rid of it, each character needs to touch the Idol of Aku (one of the guild quests anyway). You get to Aku by taking the other side of the junction that took you to the exit and using the Evil Eye on the thing in the wall. Be ready for a few Mantraps (renamed to Jungle Lilies, I think) to come out of the hole in the ground.
NIFTY TIP: Remove the Eye just when one is almost at the exit, and the door will close on it, squishing it to death. Of course, if you've got Firestorm by that time (and being a Boogre doesn't make it fizzle everytime you try it), they won't be much of a problem.
