Gonna be tough for you to start BG2 w/o BG1 XP. BG1 starts out with a "tutorial" in town that teaches you all the basics. If you want to use BG2, you're going to have to REALLY read the manuals.
Anyway, for attacking you just need to click your characters "portrait" to select him/her, then move the mouse on the red circle of the enemy and then click when the sword appears. To attack a non-hostile (blue circle) you click a "portrat" , you will see a sword icon on the bottom, click that or double click a weapin on the bottom. Your cursor will turn from "chat" to "sword" and you can attack.
You NPCs attack automatically becuase they have the default script set, which is attack enemies on site.
